Recently, several authors have revisited the nuances associated with the entropies and standard states of adsorbates on surfaces. <sup>1-6</sup> The standard state for the adsorbates is generally chosen to be an absolute or relative coverage, though surface pressures have also been used. Different choices of standard states should in principle result in the same interpretation, provided that the analysis is done carefully. However, appropriately chosen standard states can provide more easily accessible insights, or more direct comparison between different states. In this talk, two views on choices for standard states of adsorbates will be presented, for 2D gas adsorbates and immobile (Langmuir) adsorbates. The format will be some general introduction on the concept of 3D gas standard states (Savara), followed by two different views from two authors (Campbell, Savara) on recommendations for standard states of adsorbates on surfaces.
