Participation in undergraduate research is an integral component in the education of developing chemists.  Across the many models used to provide students with undergraduate research experiences, implementing faculty must carefully balance institutional infrastructure, financial support, and the theoretical/technical student skills required to complete a project.  Together, these factors can pose challenges for research programs in medicinal chemistry, which requires diverse resources and research skillsets.  In this report, we will describe efforts to establish a medicinal chemistry program of research at Augustana University, a small, private, liberal arts undergraduate university located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  This perspective will illustrate the initial steps that were taken to facilitate implementation of the program, the challenges that were encountered along the way, and a retrospective analysis of factors which were the most influential and helpful toward this goal.
