This presentation will provide examples of lessons learned from three key classes taught by Dr. Suffet: aquatic chemistry, chromatography, and fate of pollutants. The Abbott’s Building represented the physical intersection of a multi-disciplinary research approach blending civil engineering, chemistry, the Environmental Studies Institute, and the Department of Environmental Engineering and Science. Important scientific concepts were learned from Mel Suffet during his time at Drexel. The application of these concepts from environmental analytical chemistry has provided many opportunities to enhance and better understand water quality. Examples include studies at water treatment facilities and the evolution of analytical methods used to monitor water quality. Laboratory instruments will be reviewed with an emphasis on the analysis of trace organics and compounds that cause taste & odor issues. Treatment studies will be presented that demonstrate the removal of selected types of compounds (trihalomethanes, perfluorinated alkyl substances, MIB, and geosmin) from different drinking water supplies.<br/>
