The synthesis, structure, and reactivity of the first crystallographically characterized example of a Sc2+ complex is reported. To date, the only Sc2+ complexes in the literature are Sc{η6-tBu3C6H3(η6,η1-tBu2[CMe2CH2]C6H3}H and [Sc(η5-P2C3tBu3)2], which were obtained from electron beam vaporization of scandium metal into cryogenic matrices and characterized spectroscopically. To expand Sc2+ chemistry, the reduction of the simple Sc3+ complex, Sc(NR2)3 (R = SiMe3), was explored. Reduction with a variety of alkali metals and chelating agents afforded the Sc2+ anion, [Sc(NR2)3]1−. The EPR spectrum of the anion contains an isotropic eight-line hyperfine pattern attributed to the 100% naturally abundant I = 7/2 45Sc nucleus and the UV-vis spectrum exhibits an absorption at 516 nm with ε = 4,000 M−1 cm−1. The complex reacts with CO2 to form both an oxalate product and a rare example of a [CO2]1− complex.
