Azinomycin B is known to be a potent antitumor antibiotic. It can bind to the major groove of DNA predominantly through intercalation. Furthermore it contains functional groups that are specifically directed into the major groove of DNA. We have synthesized various analogues of the Azinomycin B chromophore to test their binding affinity to DNA to examine their interactions with DNA sequences in order to be able to control specific gene sequences. The full synthesis of the Azinomycin B chromophore was completed in 7 steps. Flash chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectroscopy were used to isolate, purify, and characterize compounds.
