Homoleptic uranium aryl complexes have been longstanding synthetic targets to learn about the nature of the uranium–carbon σ-bond. We report the synthesis of the homoleptic uranium(III) aryl complex, (Terph)3U (Terph = C6H3-2,6-(C6H4-4-tBu)2). The thermal decomposition of (Terph)3U has been studied to provide a mechanism to explain its instability. Insertion and protonolysis reactivity with (Terph)3U have also been investigated. In particular, (Terph)3U was found to insert iPrN=C=NiPr into two of its three U–C bonds to form a uranium(III) bis(amidinate) aryl complex, [TerphC(NiPr)2]2U(Terph). These uranium(III) aryl species have been characterized by X-ray crystallography, allowing for comparison of the U–C bond lengths.
