Lithium ion batteries have been relevant in past decades for their rechargeable nature, shelf-life, and high energy densities. LiNiO2 and LiCoO2 have been under intense study for their exceptional performance as cathode materials. Synthesis of these individual compounds is easily achieved; however, non-stoichiometric synthesis of these solid solution compounds is difficult. This study focuses on using a sol-gel synthesis to vary the ratios of nickel and cobalt while maintaining a hexagonal structure, phase purity, and controlled particle size. Additionally, the electrochemical properties were examined with respect to structural variations and distortions in the system.
