Superoxide Dismutase is a class of metalloenzymes that regulates superoxide levels in many aerobic organisms by facilitating the disproportionation of superoxides to oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. SODs contain different metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Ni) in the active site in order to facilitate the disproportionation of superoxide. In our group we are synthesizing transition metal compounds of Cu and Ni and focusing on their interaction toward superoxides or other reactive oxygenated species. Our research also focuses on understanding the effect of dentacity of the ligand. Furthermore, we are modifying the ligand frame to understand important aspect of structure/functional relationship. Our recent results on reactivity of these Cu and Ni complexes will be presented.
