Presented are efforts towards the total synthesis of the complex diterpene natural product (±)-maoecrystal V.  The synthetic route relies on Stille coupling and an oxidative dearomatization / Diels-Alder cascade to stereoselectively assemble the bicycle[2.2.2]octane core.  Approaches are then presented for constructing the strained furan ring and the remainder of the core via an inverse-demand hetero-Diels-Alder reaction.<br/>
