Aqueous solutions of sodium sulfate, contaminated with E. coli, containing different amount of oxygen were disinfected by using AC electrolysis with stainless steel electrodes (current densities from 150 to 280 ma/cm2) and initial voltage demand 12-60 volts (close circulating system). The dissolved oxygen level was analyzed with the Winkler titration method, and concentration of singlet oxygen formed during electrochemical treatment was monitored spectrophotometrically through its selective reaction with (cysteinato-N,S)bis(ethylenediamine) cobalt (III). It has been found that besides dissolved oxygen analyzed solution contains micro- and nanobubbles of oxygen. The role of singlet oxygen and other short-living species in killing bacteria has been discussed.
