Phthalocyanines are tetra-benzotetra-azaporphyrin derivatives that have been investigated for photodynamic therapy and imaging of tumors due to their chemical and photo-stabilities, architectural flexibility and ability to generate reactive oxygen species that lead to cell death.&lt;span style="font-size:10.8333px"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;Photodynamic therapy has been employed to treat skin, bladder and oral cavity tumor types.&lt;span style="font-size:10.8333px"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;Photodynamic therapy is a minimally invasive treatment in which tumor-localised photosensitizer is activated with red light generating a reactive oxygen species that leads to cell death via apoptosis and/or necrosis.&lt;span style="font-size:10.8333px"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;I will present my research on the synthesis of mono-substituted A<sub>3</sub>B phthalocyanines from cross-condensation of two phthalonitriles leading to the synthesis of pure regio-isomeric phthalocyanines that have been conjugated to biologically compatible moities that improve solubility and specificity of the conjugates, their charaterization and the results of their applicability in biological systems as imaging and photodynamic therapy agents.
