In 2006, Prof. Togni reported hypervalent iodine-based reagent for electrophilic trifluoromethylaion, so called "Togni reagent”.[1] We first found that Cu salt efficiently catalyzed reaction of indoles with Togni reagent.[2] The combination of Togni reagent and Cu catalyst was also applicable for the trifluoromethylation of alkenes.[3] We have developed various difunctionalization-type electrophilic trifluoromethylation reactions of alkenes, in which the trifluoromethyl group and a carbon-, nitrogen-, or oxygen-nucleophile are introduced to an alkene simultaneously. Since intramolecular C-C and C-N bond formations work very well, these reactions are useful for the synthesis of trifluoromethylated carbo- and heterocycles.
