Nano-sized bismuth titanates were prepared by sol-gel method using titanium (IV) terbutoxide, bismuth nitrate, glacial acetic acid, Pluronic F-127, and ammonia. Bismuth titanates were prepared by using different bismuth to titanium molar ratios (Bi:Ti= 1:1, 4:3, 12:1, 20:1, 2:3) by considering Bi2Ti2O7, Bi4Ti3O12, Bi12TiO20, Bi20TiO32 and Bi1.74Ti2O6.624 phase formation. X-ray diffraction (XRD) reveals that formation of Bi2Ti2O7, Bi4Ti3O12 and Bi1.74Ti2O6.624 bismuth titanates phases. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive atomic X-ray (EDAX) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area measurements and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS). The properties and activity of these catalysts in relation to the photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A under solar light irradiation (using solar stimulator) have been investigated. The best results were achieved with catalyst Bi1.74Ti2O6.624. Furthermore, the effects of various reaction parameters such as amount of catalyst loading and pH of the solution on photocatalytic degradation have also been studied.
