Safety as an educational component of the academic chemistry research and teaching laboratory experience has become more widely adopted, in part because of a legal agreement forged in the wake of a 2009 laboratory fatality at UCLA. The trend of fostering safety culture throughout scientific research and teaching laboratories will continue but the path forward in a post-settlement environment is expected to vary as different campuses have a spectrum of challenges to overcome. Similarities and differences found in the safety tools and support from a variety of UC and other academic research universities will discussed. We will share the thoughts and input on how to facilitate further advancement from the front-lines of chemical safety at several of these institutions.
