Nanoparticles are an important emerging pollutant due to their known potential environmental exposure and hazard. They are therefore a significant risk, although this risk is poorly quantified since most studies so not quantify nanoparticle characteristics, transformations and exposure and dose. Here we use a mixture of novel nanohybrids and novel metrology methods to appropriately answer such questions. The novel nanohybrids include in-house produced isotopically labelled, three layer core shell nanoparticles to quantify nanoparticle and ion (from nanoparticle dissolution) bioavailability. We also use single particle(SP)-ICP-MS to quantify the solution dependence of transformations in exposure media and environmental media, while single cell (SC)-ICP-MS to quantify within-cell transformations. Results show highly complex behaviours which are dependent on suspension conditions, species and sex for biouptake. Individual variability in biouptake is also strongly exhibited. The results will be discussed.
