Thoughtful chemistry experiment planning for the teaching lab encompasses multiple objectives: effectiveness of student education; efficiency and transferability of the process; safety of the lab community; and ethical treatment of the environment. Developing the knowledge and skills required to balance these aspects of the laboratory experience provides a solid foundation for future more self-directed research work. Emerging chemical safety education resources and information technologies provide an opportunity to build on the core scientific concepts found in laboratory manuals. Chemistry librarians and Environmental Health and Safety staff have been collaborating with chemistry educators to describe the teaching lab scenario in a way that facilitates electronic support of the planning process. Using the RAMP model described in Hill and Finster, a tri-fold model of: learning objectives, information sources and tools, and workflows with templates and examples is being developed for incorporating safety into the laboratory curriculum. This model will increase chemical safely knowledge in learners and engage them in the skill development specified for information management and laboratory safety in the recent ACS CPT guidelines.
