Arsenic (As) in aquatic environment is known to cause wide range of health effects. In natural water, in general, it exists in protonated oxide forms of either As(III) as H3AsO3 or As(V) as H3AsO4 or both. Because of its toxicity even in otherwise undetectable level, WHO has set 10 mg/L as the provisional limit in drinking water. The 10 mg/L limit is set based on the detection limit of the on-site analytical measures like colorimetry. For example, by using ICP-MS or graphite furnace AAS, it is possible to measure &lt; 1 mg/L Arsenic, given the concentration of interfering elements is below the required level. Also, such equipment are not accessible to every drinking water reservoirs. Also, as the concentration of any element in natural water is seldom fixed, periodic analysis is necessary. Under such circumstances, handy analytical measure is required for monitoring the Arsenic concentration in the given system at the given time. Selective adsorption of Arsenic onto ZIF-8 not only leads to the enrichment of the element onto the adsorbent, but also many of the interfering ions in the system can be easily separated from the target, Arsenic. Therefore, adsorption followed by dissolution of the adsorbent will obtain a solution with enriched level of Arsenic and negligible concentration of most of the elements present in the feed system. This very property of ZIF-8, in combination with colorimetric method, can be a potential measure for monitoring trace level Arsenic in drinking water to seawater. The ultimate target of the study is to reduce the measurable Arsenic level from 10 mg/L to at least below 0.1 mg/L, which means decreasing the risk by 1/100th of the current provisional value.
