Although solar energy is not new, the advancement of nanotechnologies incorporating light absorbing nanoparticles has opened a new course. Our group is exploring the generation of CdSe nanoparticles functionalized with varied organic ligands for integration into solar bulk heterojunctions. Here we report a size controlled synthesis of CdSe nanoparticles and investigation of bifunctional nanotethers to couple nanoparticles to aniline tetramers and polyaniline assemblies. NMR studies are used to determine nanotether coverage and quantify mixed ligand systems. Photophysical properties were studied using fluorescence and UV-Vis spectroscopies. These nanotethering studies inform new strategies to realize highly efficient, environmentally friendly, and inexpensive renewable energy materials.
