Implantable electrical devices (IEDs) aid to overcome heart events which otherwise would be mortal. The design and fabrication of optimized separators that allow for higher power densities is required to improve the performance of these electrical devices. The separators are often composed of polymers, which in turn are known to affect the discharge rate of the IEDs. To contribute to this area of research, herein we utilize materials such as polypropylene along with ceramics (e.g. barium, calcium, and strontium titanates) as a way to confer the device with a regulated electrochemistry behavior inside the device. In this research, the polymer/ceramic composite (PCC) separators are prepared by phase inversion technique and non-solvent induced precipitation of the composites. Binding agents such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and crystalline nanocellulose (CNC) are also added to the slurry to increase the interactions between the materials and reinforce the mechanical properties of the separator, respectively. These separators have been characterized using surface and electrochemical techniques. Additional dielectric studies have been completed to test their dielectric losses. Further application inside electrical double layer capacitor (EDLC) setups will be tested to get a better understanding of their electrochemical profile.
