The Glycocalyx is a complex biological interface rich in carbohydrates (or glycans) and with intricate nanoscale organization separating cells from the outside world. The purpose of cell surface glycans is to regulate intracellular signaling events as well as to mediate the interactions of cells with the outside environment. While the functional roles of individual glycan structures within the Glycocalyx have begun to emerge, very little is known about how their three-dimensional presentation influences biological events. Our lab has developed a new family of nanoscale glycomaterials that mimic the structure and function of various cell surface glycoconjugates. This talk will describe how these glycomaterials can be used to modulate signaling events leading to cellular differentiation or as probes to interrogate how pathogens navigate the Glycocalyx en route to host cells to initiate infection.<br/>
