Dirhodium(II,II) complexes with full and partial paddlewheel structures are able to electrocatalytically and photocatalytically generate hydrogen gas from acidic solutions. In addition, these complexes also reduce CO2 to HCOOH. It is believed that these reactions proceed via an axial Rh2(II,III)-hydride intermediate, which has been chemically prepared and characterized. The identity of the bridging ligands was used to tune the electron density at the bimetallic core, which can be used to vary the ratio of H2 and HCOOH. In addition, because some of these complexes possess long-lived excited state that absorb throughout the visible range, they may act as both the light absorber and the catalyst.
