New metal thiophosphate anions, [Fe(P2S8)2]2– and [FeP7S16]–, have been synthesized in [EMIM][CF3SO3] (EMIM = 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium) and [PMIM][CF3SO3] (PMIM = 1-propyl-3-methylimidazolium), respectively. Both new metal thiophosphate anions have octahedrally-coordinated iron atoms, but different thiophosphate ligands and coordination environments. [Fe(P2S8)2]2– is similar to the known metal thiophosphate anion, [Ni(P2S8)2]2– with coordination to three S atoms of each P2S82– ligand, but the [FeP7S16]– anion is unique. It has three P atoms and three S atoms bonded to the iron atom; the other four P atoms are coordinated in a tetrahedral arrangement to four S atoms. The structures and spectroscopic properties of both compounds will be presented.
