Antioxidants have been reported to have various health benefits for the human body. One of which includes neutralization of free radicals, which helps prevent oxidative stress, a condition associated with the pathogenesis of many chronic diseases such as atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammation, stroke and other degenerative diseases. Unfortunately, antioxidant could also exhibit pro-oxidant affect in the presence of transitional metal ions such as Fe2+ and Cu+. These transitional metal ions will be reduced by the antioxidant and eventually creating a cascade of radicals’ production in vivo. , Recently, a new class of potent antioxidants known as antioxidant dendrimer has been developed. This study reports a unique dendritic scaffold that has multi-functionality. The surface consists of multiple amino groups and azide groups, which will be used to attach antioxidant units as well as water-soluble, metal-chelating moieties. The final dendrimer is expected to be water soluble, have the ability to rapidly neutralize free radicals while simultaneously capture transition metal ions to prevent pro-oxidant effect.
