A bioelectrode with glucose oxidase (GOx)-serum albumin hydrogel interlocked in carbon cloth has been tested for generating high current densities with glucose as a fuel. GOx is crosslinked in the hydrogel matrix using standard carbodiimide chemistry, and the interlocked carbon-cloth electrodes showed high electrocatalytic activity for glucose with sensitivity of 40 μA.mol-1.cm-2 when ferricyanide has been used as mediator. The bioelectrode generated a maximum current density of 3.2 mA.cm-2 at 0.5 V. Enhanced performance of the enzyme-hydrogels are under further study for use in biofuel cells with high power densities and long lifetimes under simulated biological conditions.
