Cucurbiturile (CB) molecular clips have the potential for molecular recognition, forming host guest complexes with other organic molecules. Open podand CBs have received considerable attention recently in the fields of catalysis, drug delivery, molecular recognition, host-guest binding, and encapsulation of gaseous species. Open phenanthroline-cucurbiturile molecular clips were synthesized and characterized by 1H, 13C NMR, IR, X-ray crystallography, and elemental analyses. These phenanthroline-cucurbiturile molecular clips were then reacted with various metal salts to produce supermolecular complexes of higher order, with the intent of creating larger voids spaces than traditional closed CB macrocycles for molecular recognition. These new compounds were characterized by similar techniques and their use regarding molecular recognition of small molecules also investigated.
