The capability of macrocyclic polyethers (“crown ethers”) to form supramolecular complexes with a variety of guest has received much interest in the field of host-guest chemistry. Crown ethers are used in many areas including phase transfer catalysis, protein activation, cytotoxic agents, sensors, etc. Because of their selective binding properties, crown ethers bind to specific guest molecules based on the size and charge. Thus, the selectivity and sensitivity of the crown ether derivatives is widely applied in luminescent sensors for the specific detection of metal ions. Because of the unpaired electron, stable free radicals can be used as versatile probes for a variety of systems. Interaction with the free radical can be probed through a variety of methods including ESR, NMR and fluorescence quenching. Verdazyls are stable organic radicals which can be easily synthesized from aldehydes and structurally modified through standard synthetic methods. We report the synthesis and characterization of a crown ether incorporating a verdazyl. We also report initial studies of the interaction of guests with the new molecule
