Raising awareness about the green chemistry movement should be more universal. At Florida Gulf Coast University, a school that prides itself on its sustainability education program, many students report that they had no idea that old-school chemistry can be environmentally disastrous, and generally had not even heard the term “green chemistry”. To address this problem, we have begun the process of a total overhaul of the organic lab curriculum. We have added several green experiments and discussions about the improvements, as well as a term paper that encourages students to research green chemistry and its impact on our society. Response has been overwhelmingly positive and has encouraged us to attempt to add a research project where the students design and test ways to make traditional chemical reactions more green. Our progress and the results will generate a productive discussion on the implementation of green organic chemistry curriculum.
