Size selected clusters with precise number of atoms can be regarded as models of the catalytic active site. This presentation will focus on the in situ characterization of catalysts made of subnanometer size clusters and their assemblies. The cluster-based catalysts are prepared by depositing ligand-free size-selected clusters, generated in a cluster beam, on oxide and carbon based supports The stability of the clusters, the formation and the evolution of cluster-based assemblies under reaction conditions is monitored in situ by grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS), their oxidation state by grazing incidence X-ray absorption spectroscopy (GIXAS). Parallel to the characterization, the catalytic performance of the catalyst is monitored by on-line mass spectrometry. The insights gained from in situ characterization will be illustrated on select examples of catalysts in reactions such as CO2 conversion, dehydrogenation and other.
