In the language of ethnographic research, I was a covert participant observer for a year (2010-2011) in the offices of the American Chemical Society Examinations Institute.  During my time, I had the opportunity to study closely the inner workings of the only disciplinary-based assessment enterprise in the world.  Running notes of field observations were documented and analyzed using neural-network cyber-structures.   Through detailed coding of the behaviors and processes, certain themes emerged that describe the functioning of this unique organization.   To sustain my cover, I engaged in project support and research, in particular regarding assessment of attitudes at informal chemistry outreach events.   This presentation will encompass a description of results from the covert ethnographic study as well as those from the legitimate outreach assessment study.  <br/>
