The solubility of C60 is of great importance for the optimization of crystallization, extraction, and chromatographic assays of Buckminster fullerene soot mixtures. Solubility structure-property relationships are also vital for reactions involving C60 in chain growth copolymerization reactions with conventional alkene containing monomers toward novel synergistic fulleroid target materials. UV-Vis spectrophometeric solvatochromism of C60 solutions with unsaturated monomeric solvents herein provided a facile method to analyze potential fullerene-alkene monomer electronic interactions significantly affecting C60 extended polyene conjugation and fullerene agglomeration processes. C60 was dissolved in either a styrenic or cinnamyl homosolvent and compared spectroscopically to C60 solutions in a variety of aromatic or alkadiene homosolvents. Solvatochromism of specific ultraviolet absorptions are discussed with respect to the solvent’s steric hindrance and inductive effects including polarity, degree of conjugation, and π-π stacking efficacy.
