The emergence of antibiotic resistant Staphylococcus aureus presents a worldwide problem that requires new antibiotics or non-antibiotic strategies. The biofilms formed by S. aureus constitute a mechanism of antimicrobial resistance. We investigated the abilities of Molinga oleifera and seed essential oils and their components to inhibit biofilm formation by S. aureus. Moringa Oleifera leaf and seed were extracted by supercritical carbon dioxide(SC-CO2) with ethanol as a co-solvent and was extracted with Molinga oleifera leaf and seed. Molinga oleifera leaf extract and seed essential oil was evaluated for antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities. Essential oil of Molinga oleifera seed essential oil showed significant antibiofilm activity. GC-MS analysis was performed to confirm that oleic acid was most abundant from Molinga oleifera seed SC-CO2 essential oil the content of fatty acid was 74.5% of oleic acid, 7.9% of palmitic acid, 7.7% of stearic acid and 4.2% of arachidic acid. Moreover, oleic acid at 0.01% (v/v) were found to markedly inhibit S. aureusbiofilm formation without affecting planktonic cell growth. This finding suggests that essential oil of Molinga oleifera seed and oleic acid have potential use as anti-virulence strategies against persistent S. aureus infections.
