This study used an FAAS and an ICP-MS to determine the concentrations of arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, selenium, zinc and their respective isotopes in lake water and sediment cores from pristine lakes in the Pacific northwest. Data were used to evaluate the hypothesis that atmospheric inputs to this area of the U.S. are predominately from coal-fired power plants in Asia. Isotopic ratios and metal-to-metal ratios were used to test this hypothesis, in comparison to published Asia coal composition data and the metal concentrations in deep-sea water not influenced by fossil fuel inputs.
