Dendrimers are a subclass of polymers. What sets it apart from other subclasses of polymers is their high symmetry, intramolecular branching and high terminal functional group density. In the polymerization step of the growth of the dendrimer, the reaction produces two additional polymerization sites for each singular site polymerized. This then increases exponentially with each polymerization (hereafter referred to as generations). The specific dendrimer being investigated in this study is Polyamidoamine (hereafter referred to PAMAM). First synthesized by Donald Tomalia and described in a note in 1985, they were the first of the new class of polymers to be publicized. The synthesis is achieved by the addition of methyl acrylate and ethylene diamine alternatively with the terminal amine-hydrogens being the branching point for growth. The point of interest in this paper is the synthesis of 1st and 2nd generation PAMAM. This is done with an initial core of ammonia to begin with 3 different branches. Purification of the dendrimers at each generational stage were done via rotational evaporation. NMR and IR analysis is done each ½ generation to determine propagation of dendrimer growth.
