Chronic gastritis, gastric ulcers and gastric carcinoma can be caused Helicobacter pylori. This bacterium uses an unusual biosynthetic pathway involving futalosine to form menaquinone, an electron shuttle in the electron transport chain. Based on sequence homology, jhp0715 from H. pylori J99 has been identified as a member of the futalosine pathway, but has not yet been characterized. Since this pathway is present in only certain bacteria, it could potentially be a target for the development of specific anti-Helicobacter pylori drugs. Jhp0715 will be expressed and purified for potential kinetic studies.
