Organic complexes of vanadium(V) are many times studied because their odd nuclear spin can be detected using 51V NMR spectroscopy. A variety of vanadium complexes can be synthesized, with vanadium binding to N or O containing ligands with an organic framework. Interestingly, some vanadium(V) complexes have been shown to have insulin enhancing properties. This work focuses on one such complex, vanadium(V) dipicolinate, i.e. NH4[VO2(dipic)], as well as derivatives of this complex. The modifications include insertions of nitrogen between the vanadium and oxo ligands, and subsequent alkyl additions to the added nitrogen. Both 51V and 1H NMR spectroscopies are used to characterize the novel compounds. Additionally, a computational analysis of the starting dipic complexes and the derivatized compounds will be presented, including a series of NMR calculations using Gaussian with DFT theoretical approaches.
