Many freshmen chemistry classes are still taught as traditional lectures, often as a class with more than 100 students. Some students come to college from high schools that have prepared them well for this style of teaching but many others struggle. Converting a traditional lecture to an active learning class helps these students to succeed in their freshmen year. The use of a classroom response system such as clickers is the first step. Additional steps and the resulting difference in exam scores between two semesters of an introductory chemistry course with more than 150 students will be presented.
