The use of an organocobalt complex as the catalyst for production of substituted aromatic compounds could ultimately find a use in the preparation of pharmaceuticals. This study involves continuing the study of the catalytic cyclotrimerization of alkynes using the organocobalt complex pentafluorophenylcyclopentadienylcobalt(I)dicarbonyl [(C6F5)C5H4]Co(CO)2. Catalytic reactions were then performed by refluxing the reaction mixture in a J Young NMR tube. The progress of the reactions were monitored using 1HNMR which showed the decrease of reactants and increase of product indicating 100% conversion. The alkynes being studied are trimethylsilylacetylene, 1-pentyne, phenylacetylene, 4-ethynylaniline, and 4-ethynyltoluene. Trimethylsilylacetylene produced tris(trimethylsilyl)benzene in 22 hours and bis(trimethylsilyl)-2-picoline in 22.5 hours. 1-pentyne produced tripropylbenzene in 21 hours and bispropyl-2-picoline in 21 hours. Phenylacetlyene produced triphenylbenzene in 1.5 hours and biphenyl-2-picoline in 1 hour. 4-ethynylaniline produced trisanilinebenzene in 1.33 hours and bisaniline-2-picoline in 1 hour. 4-ethynyltoluene produced tris-tol-benzene in 1.25 hours and bis-tol-2-picoline in 2.5 hours.
