FIU Chemical Society successfully hosted a myriad of events both on and off campus in keeping with our mission. To celebrate Mole Day we organized “Carni-Mole” in collaboration with clubs from other STEM fields and this was a huge success. The event attracted students with the use of chemistry related and chemistry-themed games and prizes, as well as interesting chemistry demonstrations. We participated in the “National Chemistry Week Family Day” at the Museum of Discovery and Science with other Chemistry clubs from South Florida. With an aim to increase the number of women and minorities in STEM our university has been hosting events such as Geeki Girl, an Engineering Expo for middle/high school students, and the Youth Leadership Development Forum for minority high school students. FIU Chemical Society has spearheaded and been an integral part of this effort working tirelessly to inspire young minds to enter the STEM field. We continue our efforts with The University Experience Program reaching out to local high schools and bringing students to the campus to experience life as a college student for a day. Outreach to schools remains a priority and we visit schools to perform chemistry demos multiple times during the year. We have always hosted a career day to assist chemistry majors with professional development. In Fall 2016, we expanded the event to all STEM majors and hosted our first ever ACS Program In A Box, which was well received. In Spring 2017, we helped organize and participated in a day long STEM Student Success Conference, an event planned by the Dean’s office to offer career resources to the STEM undergraduate students at FIU. We remain deeply committed to the Green Chemistry initiative and are collaborating with another campus organization to increase awareness and support a transition to solar panels campus-wide.
