A combination of infrared, surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA), and density functional theory (DFT) was used to study layer-by-layer growth of dopamine on silver nanostructures (SNS). It was shown that SNS alter the monolayer adsorption of dopamine, but multilayer formation of dopamine on SNS rapidly approached bulk dopamine characteristics. DFT modeling required a combination of small metal clusters and multiple dopamine molecules (to account for strong intermolecular forces) to accurately simulate experimental results.
