For the past nine years, we have organized a Summer Undergraduate Research Experience Program in the United Kingdom, beginning at the University of Bristol for six years and expanding to the University of Bath for the past three years.  Seven out of the nine summers have been supported by the National Science Foundation through its International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) program (2010-2013) and then as an IREU site (2014-16).  The program, administered by the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, allows students to participate in a first class research experience and also gives them the opportunity to study abroad, which can be a challenge for STEM students. We will describe the program, focusing on issues and practices that are unique to an international REU.  These will include adequate program preparation, international travel, visas, health and security concerns and local knowledge.
