Ionic liquids (ILs) have become unique solvents for many organic reactions. Their low vapor pressures compared to volatile organic solvents makes them a “greener” alternative. By varying the length and substitution of the alkyl chain on the imidazolium cation and varying the anion, different ILs were synthesized. We envision using the procedure published by Stark, et al in the undergraduate organic chemistry labs to introduce students to ILs and their unique properties.
