Since 2010, the University of California at Berkeley has been modifying general chemistry courses for both chemistry majors and non-majors to include experiment modules related to green and sustainable chemistry.  The freshman chemistry curriculum for the chemistry majors includes a strong emphasis on analytical chemistry and use of instrumentation.  The first year of laboratory instruction culminates in a 4 week student-designed research project for 200-250 students.  The students present the results of their project at poster session at the end of the semester.  Using guided-inquiry methods, the laboratory experiments leading up to the project aim to iteratively build technique skills and chemistry understanding in order to make the research project as successful as possible.  Many students design projects that incorporate green chemistry.  An overview of the curriculum, the skills learned at each step and benchmarks for the project will be presented.<br/>
