As a direct result of support from the Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program of the National Science Foundation, we have developed a partnership between a two-year college, a four-year university, a major research university, and a local biofuels manufacturer to infuse research-like activities into the organic chemistry curriculum. The desire to include MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry in undergraduate training evolved into the creation of POGIL-based curriculum materials, instructional videos averaging over 2000 views per month, creation of student and faculty manuals and field trips to local universities and businesses. This work provides a model for implementing such field trips, centered around a research mini-project pursued by the students taking advanced organic chemistry and has led to improved materials for screening natural products for di-and triglycerides. The collaborative framework of this project will be discussed as well as the overlap with the Major Research Instrumentation program. Barriers to success in this multi-state and muti-institutional work and how they were overcome will be addressed. A highlight of this talk will be showcasing materials and methods used in introducing undergraduate research and advanced instrumentation into the curriculum.  All project curricular items are freely available to any individual or institution looking for an efficient and effective way to add MALDI-TOF MS and research-like activities to their existing courses.
