To understand biologically influenced systems, microbes are best understood in the context of their natural community.  Microbial community profiling tools have advanced over the past five years, making it more feasible and accessible to analyze complex microbial communities in a variety of settings. These advances have revolutionized the understanding of 'bio'-systems such as bioreactors, where the biogeochemical reactions are driven by microbes.  This presentation will discuss the application of microbial community profiling tools to determine optimization strategies for bioreactor operations targeting selenium and nitrate treatment. Different makes and models of bioreactors were operated under different operating conditions for treatment. Genetic- (targeted metagenomics) and growth-based testing was used to monitor populations in the bioreactors over time, to establish information on baseline populations and inform on optimization strategies and system upsets.
