N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have revolutionized coordination chemistry, leading to improved catalysts for alkene metathesis, cross-coupling reactions to form C-C or C-N bonds, hydrogenations, etc. We are preparing metal complexes with a mixture of polypyridyl and NHC ligands to direct the dissociation of ligands by taking advantage of the strong <i>trans</i>-effect of NHCs, leading to cytotoxic agents that can crosslink DNA. In particular, we are examining ruthenium(II) complexes of bipyridyl or phenanthroline combined with N,N’-dialkylbenzimidazol-2-ylidene or N-alkyl-N’-2-pyridylimidazol-2-ylidene ligands. We will describe the preparation, characterization and initial screening of these complexes.<br/>
