The osmate double perovskites have recently garnered interest to materials researchers because of their unique physical and magnetic properties. Even though there are quite a few osmate double perovskites in literature, very few exist with a formal oxidation state of +4, primarily because the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) limit is expected to lead to a nonmagnetic singlet ground state. Here, we have synthesized five new osmate double perovskites, La2MOsO6 (M = Mg, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn), in which the Os4+ ion has a 5d4 electron configuration. All the phases crystallize in the monoclinic, P21/n structure type. The magnetic measurements indicate that these osmates are ordered below 160 K and compared to their ruthenium analogs are strikingly different. These results allow us to provide some insight into the coupling phenomena of 3d-5d superexchange interactions and the SOC influence on magnetism.
