Previous work with ethylene oxide (EO) and 1,2-butylene oxide (BO) diblock copolymers has shown that various micellar structures can be created by altering the EO block length once the BO block has exceeded a minimum length. Additional work with triblock materials that leverage aliphatic segments to increase the hydrophobe length, shows the same type of versatility in structure formation and can be achieved at reduced CMC values. The triblock copolymers also demonstrate the same ease of structure formation as the diblock materials, requiring minimal energy input to create micelles. Studies indicate that both di- and tri-block copolymers show that simple hydration is sufficient to produce large aggregates. While this appears to be the thermodynamically-favored configuration, questions about the permanence of the resulting micelles have prompted extended particle stability studies.
