Recycled water usage is becoming an important focus as freshwater resources are becoming more and more limited. Disinfection byproducts (DBPs) are unintended consequences of killing harmful pathogens in drinking water. The DBPs that remain in the water after conventional treatment require additional and more advanced treatment. Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) are efficient wastewater treatment techniques that generate free radicals as the primary active species accountable for the degradation of organic contaminants. Typical AOPs utilize the highly oxidative hydroxyl radical (●OH), however other radicals such as the chlorine radical can also be employed. Experimentation showed that the dichloramino radical, NCl2●, found as a product of the rapid reaction of the hydroxyl radical with trichloramine, can also be utilized to remove dangerous wastewater chemicals. One chemical group of major interest is the nitrosamines, DBPs that can potentially form during the production of chloramines when the chlorine to ammonia molar ratio is increased with the addition of concentrated hypochlorite to control nitrification during chloramination. Here we report upon our determination of research in measuring the kinetics of the potential radical species NCl2● with a library of nitrosamines to assess the impact this radical chemistry has on wastewater remediation.
