Progress in the designing of potentially active anticancer drugs depends on an understanding of the specific mechanisms governing the behavior of the current drugs with cellular targets and DNA, and identifying the drugs ligands, that are interacting with the DNA. Optical spectroscopy such as Raman scattering offers useful tools to study physical and chemical changes in cells and tissues, thereby providing a unique opportunity in diagnostics and therapeutics. When the Raman scattering is dramatically enhanced by the adsorption of molecules onto the surface of metal nanoparticles, it is known as Surface<b>-</b>Enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Our research utilizes the SERS technique to investigate how anticancer drugs modify DNA. In this presentation, we will show the SERS spectra of anticancer drugs such as cisplatin, carboplatin and oxaliplatin and SERS spectra of the DNA bases. Further studies examining modifications in the spectra of the DNA in the presence of carboplatin under various sample preparation conditions such as incubation time, and concentration will also be discussed.  Our preliminary results demonstrate the ability of SERS as an advanced spectroscopic tool which can provide invaluable insight into the modifications of DNA in the presence of anticancer drugs.<br/>
