Transition metals in linear coordination environments are capable of showing unquenched orbital angular momentum – a property usually reserved for lanthanide based molecules. This property is particularly useful in the design of single-molecule magnets, as unquenched orbital angular momentum maximizes magnetic anisotropy which in turn is responsible for slow magnetic relaxation. Previous work in our lab on molecules with linear iron(II) and iron(I) ions yielded some of the largest barriers to spin-reversal for transition metal single-molecule magnets. In pursuit of larger spin-reversal barriers we have extended that work to cobalt(II), taking advantage of the larger spin-orbit coupling constant of cobalt(II). We discus herein the magnetic properties of this growing family of isoelectronic iron(I) and cobalt(II) complexes, including the first dialkyl cobalt(II) complex. The focus of this presentation will be on the relationship between molecular structure, magnetic anisotropy, and magnetic relaxation.
